Course Details

We will cover driving techniques to improve confidence behind the wheel and get to know more of what your vehicles capabilities are, with written assessment followed by practical training and testing.

This course is designed for the needs of drivers who drive 4-Wheel Drive type vehicles as part of their employment.

Each person will complete the following tasks in this 4×4 off road vehicle handling training… 

• A pre check will be completed on each vehicle to ensure it will be up to the tasks at hand. 

• Show how to assess water crossings safely by checking water depth and finding the best possible exit before traversing.

• Analyse the terrain before make ascending and descending hills, as well as driving in soft sand conditions.

• Operating a 4×4 vehicle in controlled conditions when driving over a purpose-built obstacle course where the vehicle will be put on a lean of more than 28 degrees, maneuvering over objects where only having 3 points of contact, controlling speed and braking when traversing over smaller and larger undulating obstacles.

The course consists of a ½ day for the theory/paperwork followed by a full day at the off-road location. 

Unit Standard 17676 – Carry out a pre drive vehicle check up on a light motor vehicle, start it up and shut it down.

Unit Standard 17678 – Drive a light motor vehicle on unsealed road surface.

Unit Standard 17978 – Operate a light 4wd vehicle in an off-road environment.

Cost includes 4×4 off road location hire. 

All unit standards completed will be registered and recorded with NZQA and placed on personal Records of Achievements.
